Local context & surroundings

A seaside city with a rich cultural and natural heritage

Located on the southwestern coast of the Black Sea, Mangalia is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Romania. Beyond its scientific relevance for subterranean biology, the city offers a distinctive cultural background and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

The city provides an environment well suited for informal interaction and networking alongside academic activities.
Visitors can enjoy fine sandy beaches and favorable swimming conditions from June to September, spa and wellness centers using sapropelic mud and mineral waters for balneotherapy, and seaside promenades.

Mangalia is built on the site of the ancient Greek colony Callatis, founded in the 6th century BC. Over the centuries, the city has been shaped by successive Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Romanian influences, resulting in a diverse and layered cultural heritage.

Key historical landmarks include:

  • Callatis archaeological site, the remains of an ancient fortified Greek city

  • Esmahan Sultan Mosque, the oldest functioning mosque in Romania (16th century)
